Born in 1911, in Stari Becej, Vojvodina, Serbia. From Yugoslavia to the United States.

Born under the Austro-Hungarian Empire and raised in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

Educated at the Art Academy in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and The Art Academy of Munich, Germany, graduating with a Doctorate in Art.

Surviving the Second World War in Vienna, Austria, and then eventually having to flee the Yugoslav communist regime in 1945. Then escaping to Italy, Mr. Dzigurski, with his wife and daughter, lived as refugees. Living in Trieste, Rome, and Genoa.

After receiving a visa for immigration to the United States, Mr. Dzigurski and his family left Naples, Italy (on USS Marine Jumper) bound for New York.

Living at first in Detroit with a sponsor family. Learning English while seeking a way to sell his artwork. Moving to different parts of the country, living in New York City, Chicago and eventually settling in California in 1963.

An Amazing Individual

He was a very capable man. Talented, hard-working, and passionate about his art. He developed his own individual style with an emphasis on technical drawing, composition, brushwork, and color.

Many gallery owners and art dealers have commented on what an incredible colorist he was. He mastered an array of chromatic combinations from his palette. The mixtures that he put onto canvas were extremely natural.

Many years ago, the Chicago Tribune newspaper gave him the moniker “The Poet of the Sea”.

As a young man, he was a sailor in the Royal Yugoslav Navy. He developed a love of the sea that inspired his artistic talent even more. Initially painting the Adriatic, Ionian, and Mediterranean Seas. Painting locations such as Dubrovnik, Budva, Kotor, and Rovinj along the Dalmatian Coast (Dalmatcija) as well as Trieste, Camogli (Liguria), and Capri in Italy.
